Banned Books Week is an annual event recognized by libraries nationwide to promote free access to information and raise awareness about book banning and censorship. This week highlights various classic and contemporary books that are at risk of being banned or censored in schools and libraries.

At the San Francisco Public Library, patrons can participate in the celebration by exploring exhibits and art related to the theme. One featured piece is a mixed-media sculpture by local artist Vince Koloski, titled *Books: Incarcerated: Ideas: Still at Large* (2016). This artwork combines elements of a community library and a watchtower surrounded by barbed wire, addressing the ongoing issues of book banning in the United States.

The sculpture contains a collection of novels that have faced suppression, including *All Quiet on the Western Front*, *The Catcher in the Rye*, *The Handmaid’s Tale*, and *Ulysses*. Brightly colored lights behind the tower signify the enduring nature of knowledge despite attempts to censor it.

*Books: Incarcerated: Ideas: Still at Large* can be viewed in the Main Library’s Jewett Gallery as part of the exhibit *From Disco Days to the Tech Craze: 50 Years of ArtSpan SF Open Studios*, running through November 17.
